ESCAPE FROM THE INFERNO

A few days ago, Kerrie and I seized the opportunity to get out of town and out of the heat. Those of you not familiar with Palm Springs in July, consider your self lucky. It’s not unusual for the daily temps to hover between 112 and 118 degrees. The strange silence I wrote about a few blogs ago is now replaced with the constant hum of air conditioners.

Kerrie did her usual excellent research on best get-away places and landed on a wonderful inn at La Jolla. I inwardly gulped at the location, thinking it would be a pricey trip, but was pleasantly surprised when Kerrie found a great deal for a mid-week stay. A few days later, she received an email cautioning us that the huge Museum of Modern Art was being renovated, and, oh, by the way, it was right next door to the inn. We could expect some construction noise from 7 – 3pm. Of course, my ears went back as I contemplated how much noise I could handle. I finally managed to speak to a woman at the front desk and interrogated her about said noise. Naturally, she minimized the lovely construction noise, saying she could hardly hear it from the office. The lure of the ocean and cooler temps easily won out.

We arrived at the Scripps Inn and were blown away by our room. It was right across the street from the ocean. All we had to do was walk across the street to a grassy park and gaze at the magnificent Pacific. The happy locals and visitors were out enjoying the cool weather, walking, biking, scootering, almost all wearing masks. We were surprised when we saw a large family unmasked and grumbled as we walked by. After a lovely walk to a lunch on a shady patio, we returned to our room and discovered the loud construction noise was disturbing. I pouted and complained as Kerrie sat blissfully reading in her chair, engrossed in her novel. Eventually, I figured out I could stick my earbuds in, listen to Pandora, and enjoy reading my current mystery.

Sigh. Being grown up and flexible is such a chore when you’re having fun!
