Big toys and landscaping

It’s always a thrill for me to get the opportunity to use large equipment when I can include large plant material in one of my installations. My crew can usually handle a 24” or 36” (plant sizes are determined by the size of the bucket it’s in-1- 5 gallon, 15 gallon, 24”-48” box) plandscape crane and bobcatcrane and bobcatlant with the use of our large tree dolly. Anything larger than that is super heavy and requires some mechanical muscle. Here’s an example of how this scenario would go: I’d locate and tag the specified tree I like for my plan, say a 48” fruitless olive; then  arrange for a delivery from a flatbed truck and pray that that coincides with the huge crane arriving at the same time. (grey hairs are often sprouted from the lack of synchronicity of said crane and delivery); then I must quickly determine the “face” of the tree as the crane slowly lifts it into the air; and  pray as the tree is lifted over the very expensive house into the arms of my waiting crew members who guide it gently into its pre-dug hole. More often than not, the crew has over zealously dug a hole that is too deep, then I signal the crane operator with a upward,  circular arm signal to lift the tree while the guys furiously shovel dirt back into the hole. The tree is lowered slowly into the hole again, and I check that the face and the level is correct. The crew adds handfuls of time-release fertilizer tabs into the sides of the hole, the dirt is shoveled back in the hole, and a garden hose is used to poke the dirt in and eliminate any air pockets. Easy peasy!  Check out the following four pictures!
